How to Create an Interesting Human Chessboard Photo Manipulation in Photoshop

This tutorial will show you how to create an interesting photo manipulation of a human chessboard. All in Photoshop.

01. Open a picture you’d wish to start manipulating.

02. Now turn the photo to black and white by going to Image > Adjustment > Desaturate.

03. Now open a picture of a chessboard pattern and set the blend mode to Darker color and also lower the opacity a bit.

04. Now take the eraser tool and delete the chessboard pattern where it shouldn’t be.

05. Now go to Filter > Liquify, take the first tool on the upper right, set the brush size at the Brush size, also check the Show Backdrop box and select All layers from there. Now start adjusting the squares according to the face curves. Just drag on the edges to move them.

06. When you are done adjusting the squares, duplicate the layer by right clicking on the chess layer and choosing Duplicate.

07. Then take the dodge tool and light up the light parts on the black spots. You can repeat the same on the background – setting a pattern there and deleting the unnecessary parts.

08. And now you know how to create an interesting photo manipulation of a human chessboard.
